Persuasive Essay on Capital Punishment

Capital Punishment is defined as the “premeditated and planned taking of a human life by a government in response to a crime committed by that legally convicted person.”

Capital Punishment is one of the oldest forms of punishment. Capital punishment is utilized to serve as a deterrent against crime.

Some of the methods employed in the past to inflict capital punishment against a person who had been adjudged guilty of a crime were physical torture, stoning to death, beheading, hanging and burning at the stake. With the latest developments technology the society has found a way to make capital punishments a “more humane” of punishment. Among the recent means used are lethal injection and the gas chamber.

While the Supreme Court has already ruled in favor of the constitutionality of capital punishment in the case of Gregg v Georgia (428 US 153), there are still a number of advocacy groups and organizations which question the wisdom and the constitutionality of capital punishment.

One of their arguments is that capital punishment does not serve to deter crime. It violates the equal protection clause and the due process clause. Moreover, it is a cruel and inhuman method of punishment regardless of the means used to execute the criminal offender. It is also an irreversible process that deprives the offender from availing of new technologies that may be used to establish his innocence.

Essay on Philosophy on Change - Aristotle

The debate on whether or not things change or simply appear to change has long been the subject of debate among philosophers. According to the Eleatic philosophers change is not real since everything that exists in reality had always existed. Change is not real and that things only appear to be changing because of our senses. For them, only our reason can be trusted.

Plato arrived at the same conclusion who thought that change is not real.

If the past philosophers before him rejected the reality of change Aristotle accepted the concept of change. Aristotle thought that everything is subject to change. In fact change is the only thing that is permanent and immutable in the natural universe.

Aristotle offered an example of change that avoids the dilemma presented by Parmenides that either you exist or you are not. Aristotle cites as an example, a man who does not like music suddenly becomes in love to musical or a block of stone which was initially shapeless becomes a horse. In these cases, it is indubitable that there is change.
Change, for Aristotle, is therefore the actuality of that which exists potentially, insofar as it is potentially this actuality

Research Paper Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Women were not always protected against sexual advances or any unwelcome and inappropriate sexually-based behavior by their supervisors. There was a time when they were forced to endure statements and behaviors from their male superiors that rendered the workplace atmosphere intimidating and hostile. There was no mechanism in the workplace that protected them against these acts of discrimination and sexual harassment.

During this time, the prevailing opinion was that if a supervisor sought sexual favors from his subordinate he does so because of sexual attraction not because of any intent to discriminate based upon gender. Some courts reasoned that sexual advances made by supervisors were beyond the scope of employment and therefore not employment-related.

As a result, women employees were often the victims of sexual advances and indecent proposals from their supervisors. They were however discouraged to seek justice for the harassment they experienced in their own workplace. The prospect of losing their job was just too burdensome for their professional life and their family. Majority of women just kept their silence on this issue.

Nowadays, there are laws against sexual harassment in the workplace. Harassment is now considered a discriminatory act and behavior. In fact, courts do not only impose liability against the employee or manager concerned but even against the company itself.

Steve Carter (2008) discussed the issue of sexual harassment in his article entitled “Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace.” He said that sexual harassment issues present difficulties for the organization since it exposes the organization to vicarious liability for the actions of its employees and others who frequent the workplace. Thus, an organization is held directly liable for actions that it deliberately and knowingly takes regarding its employee or group of employees.

Research Paper on Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances

The essence of a democratic system of government is that the three main powers of government are constitutionally divided into three: a) the power to propose, enact, amend and repeal the law; b) the power to execute the law; c) the power to interpret the law.

The United States Constitution has delegated these three important functions to three separate departments each department is co-equal and supreme within its own sphere.

The legislative branch has the power to propose, enact, amend and repeal the law. The executive branch has the power to execute the law. The judiciary has the power to interpret the law.

It should be emphasized however that the principle of separation of powers does not mean that there exists animosity or rivalry among the three branches. Such is the system established by the United States Constitution to ensure compliance with the constitution.

Another principle provided under the constitution is the system known as the checks and balances by which one department is allowed to resist encroachments made by one department against another or to rectify mistakes and errors committed by the other department.

One particular example is the veto power of the president which serves as a check to the power of the Legislative branch to make laws by exercising its veto power. If the president thinks that the law is not timely or not proper, the president may not to sign the same into law or veto a particular bill. One particular example is HR 810 or the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2006 which authorized the Secretary of State to conduct and support research that utilizes human embryonic cells. This bill was vetoed by the president.

Resarch Paper on Serial Killer - Jeffrey Dahmer

One of the most well-documented and highly publicized criminal behaviors is that of Jeffrey Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer was a notorious serial killer who mutilated, murdered and cannibalized his victims.

Dahmer’s profile presents an interesting object of study for behavioral psychologists. He did not grow up from a bad family. He was also not associated with bad peers. Yet he became one of the most hated serial killers in US history.

Born on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, many researchers believe that Jeffrey Dahmer’s problems started even before he was born. Joyce Dahmer, his mother, constantly complained of morning sickness and muscle spasms forcing her to take drugs and pills on a daily basis.

As a child, Jeffrey Dahmer curiously found pleasure in killing and mutilating animals. He also performed weird experiments with these animals by performing surgeries on them. During his trial, it was found out that he collected dead animals and exhibited signs of necrophilia.

Several theories have been offered to explain why individuals start to brutalize and slay people. Among these theories are the Differential Association Theory, Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory and the Biological Trait Theory. The first theory is founded on the idea that deviant behavior is an act which is learned. Criminal conduct does not come out of a void but is learned through constant associations with individuals. Freud, on the other hand, theorized that human behavior is linked to the development of a person’s unconscious personality.

Research Paper on Juvenile Justice System

The Juvenile Justice System refers to a network of agencies that deal with juveniles who have come in conflict with the law. Among these agencies are the police, prosecutor, detention, court, probation and the Department of Juvenile Corrections.

The purpose of the Juvenile Justice system is to deter juveniles from committing illegal acts in the future.

The establishment of juvenile justice system is said to have been spearheaded by Jane Adams who was one of the leaders of the juvenile court movement. She founded the Full House in 1899 in Chicago, Illinois which was the first juvenile court.

The main reason for the establishment of a juvenile justice system is that juvenile courts are more focused on rehabilitation and treatment of the juvenile offender. While the adult criminal courts also put emphasis also on rehabilitation and treatment, the juvenile courts give more emphasis on this task rather than adult courts.

Moreover, juvenile justice system sees the minors as victims of circumstances more than the adult offenders. Consequently, there is greater protection for the minor in juvenile justice system. On the other hand, the objective of the adult legal procedure is typically focused on sentencing and punishment for the crime committed.
